Sonja Morgan reveals why she believes her former Real Housewives of New York City co-star Barbara Kavovit is not the right candidate to become the mayor of New York City.
“I didn’t think much about that,” Morgan laughed when asked if she would consider voting for Kavovit, who has been running for the city’s highest office since January.
“I mean, I think Barbara has other things to take care of other than other people, you know, that’s just my humble opinion,” she told Page Six.
Morgan reveals her ideal candidate for mayor is someone who’s “strong” as well as “financially stable and not in it for the handshake or the glory.”
“I want someone that really loves this city and that goes for our governor as well… I miss Bloomberg. I miss Mayor Koch. I miss Dinkins,” she reminisced. “We need somebody with gumption and grit. Who’s not in it for the glory or the money or the book deal.”
In January 2021, Kavovit took to Instagram to announced that she is running to become New York City’s mayor.
“I’m running for Mayor of New York City because the city that I love, the city of opportunity where I built my business and my dreams, is in a state of crisis. I may not be a politician, but I’m a Bronx-born New Yorker who isn’t fearful of the hard work and tough decisions that lay ahead. It will take a builder to rebuild #NYC, and I’m the woman to do it.,” she wrote via Instagram.
She concluded by adding the hashtags, “#msbarbarak #BarbaraKavovit #BarbaraKavovitforNYCMayor #Elections2021 #NewYorkCity #MayoralElections2021”
Speaking with Page Six, Kavovit said her top priority as mayor would be to “rebuild a safer and more inclusive New York City.”
“So I feel like the city is not a safe place. So if it’s not safe, people don’t want to come to New York City. People don’t want to stay in New York City,” she said.
According to Us Weekly, the Democratic primary will take place in June. The former reality star will face off with Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams, former presidential hopeful Andrew Yang, ex New York City sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia and former Citigroup exec Ray McGuire.
While Barbara won’t have Morgan’s support, she has garnered the support of current “Housewives” Braunwyn Windham-Burke in Orange County, Margaret Josephs in New Jersey, and D’Andra Simmons in Dallas.
