Real Housewives of New York City star Countess LuAnn de Lesseps recently appeared on Oxygen's Celebrities Undercover. The premises of the show is it will feature two celebrities concealing their true identity with the use of prosthetic make-up to find out what unsuspecting fans and friends really think of them without the distraction of their famous personas. LuAnn went undercover and portrayed the loud and energetic "Donna". LuAnn's mission was to find out if class is something bought or earned. But what did the Countess learned from being on Celebrities Undercover? Click below to find out!
What appealed to you about going on Celebrities Undercover?
I love hidden camera shows. I love the element of surprise, and personally I loved doing the improvised bit and playing this character. I actually invented her when I got there. She’s basically a combination of a couple of people from my past. It was really fun staying in character the whole time and making people believe that I was someone else! I grew up in a big family and we did a lot of April Fools-type tricks on each other growing up, so this was fun for me and it reminded me of that. When I came back from the show I took an improv class because of it!
Do you try and stay away from internet chatter?
I try to stay away from blogs because I don’t like people who say bad things because they have nothing better to say. Negativity is the nature of the beast when it comes to the blogging world. Sometimes you get a compliment, but, more than anything it’s negative. I check in with blogs, sure, but if I see it taking a negative direction, I walk away to protect my own sanity.
What did you learn from being on Celebrities Undercover, and flying headlong into the gossip?
I learned that there are more women who should be on the Housewives show! I also learned that there are a lot of haters out there and they’re not just bloggers. They come in every shape and form.
What did it feel like to look and act like a normal joe? (well she’s not really normal…)
Well she’s not very average. she’s the tanning mom meets tacky meets everything that always I've been in awe of. They dress with bright colors, they wear bright colored lipstick, they spend a ton of money on clothes that always look tacky. For me it was really fun to be this other person.
When you do encounter hate, how do you rise above?
I use positive self-talk. I was a nurse in my past, and I know that every day I open my eyes is a good day. I try to be as positive as I can, I try to be upbeat, and I don’t have time for negative people who are negative and bring me down. That’s what my song lyrics are all about on “Chic C’est la Vie”: “The little things can take you down, so it’s best to brush them off!”
Is there a way to gossip with class?
No. Not unless you’re gossiping about how fabulous they are or how they inspire you, or how they make you feel good. Otherwise, there is no positive gossip.
What are you hoping your fans and your haters will learn from your appearance on the show?
I hope people will see me in a different light. I think people will see that I like to have fun and that I don’t take myself too seriously. If I did take myself seriously, then I couldn't do a show like this! For me, it was really fun to hear people talk about me and kind of giggle about it. Because in the end: I don’t really care what people think about me. I know who I am, and people have their opinions and they’re entitled to them, but that doesn't make me believe that I am who they think I am!
